Dear Patients and Friends:

You hear a lot about omega-3 fatty acids these days. Most of us think of fish when we hear the term. Humans need omega-3's to keep our cell walls flexible and permeable, and to help fight inflammation. An inflexible,
impermeable cell wall cannot allow nutrients in and waste products out very easily. It is also resitant to insulin, which is how we become diabetic. And inflammation is present in every disease process, including heart
disease. If you don't get enough omega-3 fats, you are prone to developing these health issues.

So why are fish like salmon and cod so high in omega-3's? Because they eat algae, which are little green plants, and they become concentrated in their bodies. ALL green plants contain omega-3's; they are essential in their photosynthesis cells. This is one of the multitude of reasons why WE need to eat lots of green plants, preferably 5+ servings per day. You won't be able to get all your omega-3's from green plants; eating avocados, walnuts, fish, and olives are other great sources. Even butter (not margarine) has some omega-3's, although grass-fed cows produce higher omega-3's than corn fed cows.

Health tip: Eat a large variety of green plants! Shoot for 50% of your day's food intake, which is half of every plate of food you eat. You will be healthier!
